What to Expect from Trigger Finger Surgery?

If you have been diagnosed with a trigger finger, then you are familiar with the symptoms. The finger can be stuck in a curled position. Unfortunately, it can often cause significant pain leading some patients to consider surgery at an outpatient surgery center in Cary.

Often the pain is experienced not just when the finger is used continuously, such as at one’s job but also when participating in simple activities of daily living such as getting dressed. Surgery can help return to the things your need to accomplish in life without pain.

Is Surgery Right for You?

Candidates usually have tried other treatment methods that have failed. They also have to be in good health to be a candidate for surgery. Some non-surgical methods that the physician may suggest include:

  • Rest for 3-4 weeks without doing any activities that aggravate the finger
  • Take an NSAID such as ibuprofen as directed to try to help with pain and swelling.
  • You may need to wear a splint for up to 6 weeks to see if the rest helps with the finger.
  • Or were steroid injections offered? Steroid injections are usually effective in about 77% of patients with a trigger finger.

If conservative methods have failed, then it may be time to consider surgery at our Cary orthopedic surgery center.

What Does Surgery For a Trigger Finger Entail?

Once the decision has been made to have surgery, you are likely wondering how the surgery will be performed. The goal of the surgery is to cut the tendon sheath so more space is created so the finger can move as before.

The procedure is done by one of two procedures. Your physician will discuss which one will be more successful for you.

Open Surgery

Open surgery can still be done, outpatient. You can expect to go home shortly after surgery.

The surgeon starts by giving a sedative through an IV so you may relax. Next, they numb the area of the finger in which they are performing surgery with a local anesthetic.

They then can make a small incision into the palm to release the tendon or “sheath” that is causing the symptoms in the finger.

The Other Option is a Percutaneous Release

For this procedure, there is no cutting or scarring. It is often done in the doctor’s office:

  • The doctor will numb the finger and the area surrounding it.
  • They insert a needle to move the blocked site in the finger to provide relief.
  • The doctor may use ultrasound to ensure they are in the targeted area.

Are There Complications?

There are minimal risks for the surgery. Most people have no complications or problems with trigger finger surgery. If there are complications, the most common include:

  • Stiffness in the affected finger
  • Difficulty straightening the finger despite having the surgery
  • Soreness or swelling in the finger that had surgery

If any of these complications arise, be sure to discuss with your provider immediately to discuss options for resolution.
